What is Mental Illness? (Part Two)

That’s right! I had to come back and talk to you guys about mental illness a little bit more. There are so many preconceived notions that people have about mental illness and I think it’s time we debunk some mental illness myths!

Myth #1: Having a Mental Illness Means You’re Weak

Fact: This could not be more false. Mental illnesses are the results of the equation of biological, social and psychological variables. It is very likely to succumb to mental illness and not have done anything to cause it. Having a mental illness DOES NOT mean that you’re weak!

Myth #2: A Pill is Always the Cure

Fact: In some cases a health professional will prescribe a medication to aid a specific patient with their mental illness, however a pill IS NOT always the cure. Other treatments for mental illnesses include therapeutic journeys, self-help strategies and more. There are many options for mental health treatment.

Myth #3: People with Mental Illnesses are Violent and Scary

Fact: You’d be surprised how many people actually have a mental illness that seem, to the common eye, that nothing is wrong with them. Majority of those with a mental illness are no more violent than those without a mental illness.
