What is Mental Illness? (Part One)

What comes to mind when someone mentions mental illness? What do you instantly think of? Mental illnesses are health conditions involving changes in emotion, thinking or behavior (or a combination of these). Mental illnesses are associated with distress and/or problems functioning in social, work or family activities.

Mental illness has a lot of different faces to it. It does not only affect adults but people of all ages. Many people believe that mental illness can not affect them but in actuality it can affect any of us. It is so important to really listen to your body and your mind. A few examples of mental illness are:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): a condition that makes it makes it difficult for people to pay attention and/or control their impulsive behaviors.
  • Panic Disorder: a type of anxiety disorder. This disorder causes panic attacks which leave people in a sense of fear or terror in the face of no obvious or real danger.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): a subtype of depression or bipolar disorder that occurs and ends around the same time every year. It is sometimes referred to as “winter blues.”
