When trying to lose weight or build muscle, it is important to know what type of body you have and work best with it. The three main body types are:
- Ectomorph: Lean and long, with difficulty building muscle
- Endomorph: Big, high body fat, often pear-shaped, with a high tendency to store body fat
- Mesomorph: Muscular and well-built, with a high metabolism and responsive muscle cells
As an ectomorph, this means that your body does well with processing carbohydrates for your body to use as energy for fuel. In addition, with this body type, you will have a metabolism on the faster side making it easy for you to burn off fat. As an ectomorph, you might struggle with gaining weight because you lose weight so easily so be sure to limit the amount of cardio you do and make sure you increase your intensity in your workouts to build strength. Ideally, three days of strength training and 2 days of low cardio.
Your favorite Endomorphs like Beyoncé and Ava DuVernay have very classic endomorph shapes as these women typically have more defined curves. Unlike ectomorphs, foods high in carbohydrates are quickly converted to sugar in the bloodstream and are more likely to be stored as fat than be burned for energy. Since most endomorphs have a higher percent body-fat, this puts them at a higher risk of developing diabetes, infertility, certain forms of cancer, gallbladder conditions, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and depression. According to ACE Fitness:
“the best nutrition plan for this body type focuses on an even distribution of macronutrients, with carbohydrates coming mostly from vegetables and smaller amounts of unrefined, high-fiber starches, like quinoa and amaranth. Stay away from the bread, cereal, cracker and cookie aisles of the supermarket! A Paleo-like diet is best suited for an endomorph, where each meal contains protein, vegetables, and some healthy fats, like avocado or olive oil”
When it comes to mesomorphs, individuals with this body type typically have a rectangular body shape being neither overweight nor underweight. Because of this, mesomorph typically has a fairly even weight distribution. Although it is slightly easier to gain muscle as a mesomorph, they are still prone to weight gain so concentrating on diet and cardio is imperative.
