UNDERSTANDING YOUR CURL PATTERNS

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CURL PATTERNS

Discovering your curl pattern allows you to understand your hair’s unique characteristics, product selection and styling do’s and don’ts. The curl pattern begins at Type 2a all the way to Type 4c. The letters beside each number defines the hair density i.e. “a” = fine/thin hair “b”= medium thick “c” = very dense/thick coarse hair.

The 2’s
Hair types 2a, 2b and 2c consist of a loose wavy curl pattern. This hair type tends to get easily weighed down from heavy products with a tendency to frizz. This hair type does well with sulfate-free shampoos, light silicone-free conditioners and curl enhancing products to help formulate curl definition.

The 3’s
Hair types 3a, 3b, 3c are defined as curly hair. This hair category ranges from spirally curls to coily curls. Hair begins to increase in texture and curl definition. Type 3 curl patterns tend to be easily effected by the weather; therefore, it’s important to know what type of products keep the hair looking its best. Sulfate-free moisturizing cleansers are essential! Moisturizing deep conditioners are also vital as they help hydrate and define each curl. Light moisturizing leave-in creams and gels are encouraged to set and define the curls and eliminate frizz.

The 4’s
4a, 4b and 4c types are very coily and kinky with slightly less curl definition. This hair type ranges from a cotton-like feel, to wiry hair, to very tightly coiled hair. Coily hair has less cuticle layers on the hair shaft making it susceptible to damage and dryness. Use little to no direct heat (flat irons, blow dryers, curling iron etc.) with this hair type. The fragility of the strands increases in type 4 hair; therefore, it’s important to take your time and be gentle while manipulating the hair. Opt for deep moisturizing cleansing conditioners. Leaving conditioner in the hair is a great way to keep the hair hydrated. Creamy puddings and custards aid in elongating the curls preventing shrinkage, which is very common with this hair type.

BEAUTICIAN’S NOTE: Texture typing and curl patterns are simply a guide to help you understand your hair and certain characteristics it may possess. These categories aid in providing clarity on how your hair behaves and how to best treat it for a successful hair journey. Have fun and enjoy!
