So in my Slay 2019 with a financial fresh start post I talked about how this year we are reinventing our lives and taking our finances into our own hands. If you missed it I talked briefly about how a lack of finances can affect your overall health as well. I hope after reading that last post you were able to also picture some financial goals in your mind that you wanted to work towards. Maybe you want to buy a house in a couple of years, or set up a child’s college fund, or maybe you’re just young and single, and you want to save up for retirement and buy those Louboutins you’ve had your eye on (yes that last one is mine). No matter what your goal is, you’re going to have to adopt some strategies to help you get there. So here are my top 3 tips to get started on your Financial Fresh start:
Make a Budget
This is one of the easier parts (sticking to it is the struggle!). I will have a full explanation on the best ways to make a budget next week but this is a very important step that lots of people forget. You can’t get ahead financially winging it, you need a plan! And no, writing down all your bills each month is Not a budget sis! Go into detail about how much money you’re bringing in, and be real with yourself when you are crafting your budget
This one seems contrary but its important! People deprive themselves in order to try and reach goals, but we know from weight loss advice that this is a poor strategy. Just like your eating habits, everything in moderation is fine, and treating yourself is necessary but only after you have accomplished something (and no, making it through Monday doesn’t count.) Set yourself up for success by writing it down or even making your own vision board, and make sure your treats don’t negate your progress! For example, don’t set a goal to save 200 a month, and then spend it all as your treat. You want to still be ahead of where you were before, even after you’ve had your treat.
Learn to notice and control your emotions.
Okay so this one right here is hard, and i’m not perfect, but a step in the right direction is all that’s needed for now. Emotions can make you shop, eat, and drink way too much, and all of those things cost money. Noticing when you’re becoming emotional (positive or negative emotions) and finding another remedy that is cheaper (or even better free!) is a great way to start your journey to having a healthy financial life. For example, stressing out can cause you to overeat, or eat the wrong foods. Try doing something else instead like dancing or singing, or taking a hot bath. All these things can be cheap (or free) and also keep your waistline in order as well.
So those are my top 3 tips to start getting your finances in order. We are slaying 2019 in all kinds of ways and finances are at the core of many of them.
And as always don’t forget to live your best life sis!
