THE TRUTH ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

As days go by people go through a lot of things in their lives, it could be emotionally or socially. This can happen at home, workplace, social events, or it could be anywhere.  We try to do things to take care of ourselves emotionally, psychologically, or socially. We can manage things sometimes but not all the time. According to medlineplus.gov, Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel, and act as we cope with life. It also helps determine how we handle stress, related to others, and make choices. 

Mental illnesses are serious disorders that can affect your thinking, mood, and behavior. They may come occasionally, or they may be long-lasting. Mental illness can affect a person’s ability to relate to others and function each day. A lot of Americans are diagnosed with mental disorders at some time in their life.  A lot of women go through mental health issues. According to womenshealth.gov, more than 1 in 5 women in the United States experienced mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety. There are treatments for people with mental health issues. People need to seek help.

Warning Signs of Mental Illness

Long-lasting sadness

Extremely high and low mod

Excessive fear, worry or anxiety

Social withdrawal

Dramatic changes in eating or sleeping habits 

Mental health is important because, it can help you to cope with stress, you can have good relations with others, you can be physically healthy, you can make meaningful contributions to your community. There are a lot of people with mental illnesses that are productive to the community because they seek help and may be in some form of treatment. There is always help available. 

There are many steps you can take to improve mental health. They include getting enough sleep, staying positive, developing a sense of meaning and purpose in life, meditating, connecting with others, getting professional help.  If you are experiencing any signs of mental illness or you know someone experiencing these signs, come and hear something from the mental health advocates at the minds matter mental health campaign.
