How to Stay Focused & Finish the Race

We’re just over halfway into September which means the end of the year is right around the corner. If you’re anything like us, chances are you’re thinking back on those resolutions, goals, and things you promised yourself you’d accomplish this year. Whether your plans included a literal race like completing a 5k, or more modest things like losing a few extra pounds or finally making the transition to natural hair, if you haven’t exactly made the progress you liked, there’s still time to stay focused and finish the year strong.

Take Some Time to Review

So often we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that we don’t realize exactly how far we’ve come. Before you start to beat yourself up about not reaching those things that you planned, take a moment to review how far you’ve come. Celebrate the things you’ve accomplished no matter how big or small.

Start with the Simple Things First

You know what gets you excited to keep going? Success. When you achieve one thing, it motivates you to move on to the next and repeat the process. Take a look at what you have left on your list of things to accomplish this year. Is there something simple like signing up for a gym membership? Do that. Losing a few more pounds? Put a simple plan in motion to get rid of them before next month is over. Little victories lead to bigger victories so don’t be afraid to start small.

Break Down Bigger Goals

After you start small, it’s time to think big. You know those goals you put on your list that were so huge you haven’t even started to tackle them? That 5k race perhaps? Now is the time to break those bigger goals down into smaller more actionable steps. You might not get around to the 5k before the year is out but you may reach your smaller goals like running a mile or making running a daily habit

Let Go

And finally, when it comes to achieving the things that matter most to you, sometimes that means letting go of things that don’t. A lot of us put more pressure and things on our plate than we need to–or even really want to. Finish out the year strong by letting go of the goals that don’t really matter to you anymore. That might not mean forever, but it will at least give yourself the space stay focused on those things that are most important.
