Often Imitated, Never Duplicated

Often Imitated, Never Duplicated

Women, we are one of God’s most precious creations. The world as we know it would not exist without us. The ability to build a nation rests within our wombs. We are the health of our households. We continue to break glass ceilings. We dominate boardrooms. We have enough multitasking abilities to take care of home and community. We are setting trends and blazing trails in every field imaginable. There’s not one piece of history that hasn’t been blessed by our presence. Now, compound all of this with being Black, and you have achieved greatness! But no matter how dope we are, our value is often downplayed, if acknowledged at all.

Black women are labeled as aggressive, angry, attitudinal, and standoffish. Some very unattractive words for such radiant beings. We are typecast, and often viewed as less than. But what is often seen as a double minority I see as being doubly blessed. I think that all women are amazing, but I am truly honored to be a Black woman. Our stride, our pride, our nature, our nurture, our faith, our beauty, our features, our passion, our hearts, our strength, our compassion, our minds, our versatility; there’s nothing like it.

There are so many phenomenal Black women that have paved the way for me to walk proudly as a young black woman. They didn’t shy away from challenges because of what society said they were or were not. They faced everyday life with the same zeal they did when facing obstacles. They did what they had to do whether or not they wanted to. They held it down even when they were down and out. Despite being told they weren’t good enough, were not qualified, or didn’t have the right look, they never allowed that to stop them from reaching and exceeding goals. These women were often labeled and deemed unworthy, but refused to let naysayers have any say over their life.

It’s never been easy being a woman, let alone one who is Black. But not once in my life have I ever wanted to be anyone else. I marvel at our legacy and the continuous contributions we make to this world. So, to all the ladies in the place with style and grace, Happy Women’s History Month.
