Lupus Awareness Month

The color purple means many things to many people. Most commonly, purple is the color chosen to symbolize Lupus awareness.

Did you know that African American, Asian, and Latina women are much more likely to develop Lupus than white women? Women as young as FIFTEEN can develop this incurable illness.

Lupus is an autoimmune affliction, meaning the body does not recognize its own tissues and defense systems. It causes inflammation and pain that can be mild to debilitating. Lupus can also cause extensive damage to the kidneys. Treatment options can range simply from Ibuprofen to extensive chemotherapy.

“Flares” (when symptoms become heightened) seemed to be triggered more at periods of high stress. As with most illnesses, it is crucial to get the right amount of rest and relaxation. Many patients benefit from meditation, deep-breathing-exercises, and natural oil supplementation to relieve stress. It is hopeful that most can manage their symptoms without need for medications.
