Keto vs. Paleo: Which Diet Option is Best for You?

Is there a such thing as the perfect diet?

There are so many diets swarming the internet and you need to find the best one for you. Two diets that are frequently talked about are the Keto Diet and the Paleo Diet, but now you have to decide which one is best for you to try. I’m not going to tell you which one is better. Instead, I’m going to give you more information on both diets to help you reach a distinctive decision.

What is the Keto Diet?

The Ketogenic, or keto, diet is a low-carb high fat diet. You consume less sugar and consume very little carbs. With this diet, most of your calorie intake comes from fat. The goal of the ketogenic diet is to reach a state known as ketosis. This is where your body burns fat for fuel instead of carbs.

What can you eat?

  • Leafy Greens
  • Meats or plant-based meats
  • Poultry
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Dairy
  • Berries
  • Healthy Fats: i.e. avocados and olive oil

The Pros of the Keto Diet!

The keto diet is useful for rapid weight loss when carried out safely, preferably under the guidance and close monitoring of a physician. Lowering the carbohydrate intake allows your body to retain less water which often leads to weight loss.

The Cons of the Keto Diet!

Sometimes people following the ketogenic diet fall to the “keto flu.” The keto flu, also known as the carb flu, is an assortment of symptoms some people experience during the beginning of their keto diet journey. Many of these symptoms feel similar to symptoms of the flu and appear as a reaction to the body adapting to the new diet that consists of meager amounts of  carbohydrates. The keto diet high fat intake can also cause heart health issues. The diet calls for the consumption of a lot of meats which contain saturated fats. High cholesterol has been shown to increase in some people following this diet which is means they are at high risk for cardiovascular disease.

What is the Paleo Diet?

The Paleolithic, or paleo, diet is a based on the concept of eating foods that were available to humans during the paleolithic era. This diet avoids dairy, any grains, and processed foods. With this diet, most of your calorie intake comes from protein.

What can you eat?

  • Poultry
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Eggs
  • Seafood
  • Coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil
  • Grass-fed meat

The Pros of the Paleo Diet!

The diet eliminates processed foods from consumption which improves blood sugar levels and blood pressure because less salt and sugar is consumed. The paleo diet allows you to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables which increases potassium levels. This diet plan also leads to healthy weight loss.

The Cons of the Paleo Diet!

A possibility that is associated with the paleo diet is the loss of certain important nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, because grains and dairy are eliminated from the diet. For example, this can result in higher risks of bone injury, for example.
