I Tried the CEO Routine: My Thoughts | Reinvent your life series

I’d like to preface this post by saying that I am a morning person (don’t you judge me) and have been for a while, but this routine though? Whoa! It is really good, however there are definitely some aspects of it that need adjustment. I tried it for several weeks and finally just came to the realization that this routine as is just is not for me, and I’m going to find a variation of it that works better for my schedule. The CEO routine is basically a culmination of the routines of your favorite CEOs. People like Steve Jobs and others have a very long work day, some 18 hours long and I now understand the salaries that they receive. The routine that I implemented looks a little something like this:

  1. Wake up at 4am
  2. Practice gratefulness
  3. Make my bed
  4. Have coffee
  5. Work for 2 hours
  6. Yoga
  7. Get dressed
  8. Head to school/work

Now sis I know what you’re thinking. “4am? You’re crazy”, and yes I was, very much so to try getting up that early. However it was fun to push myself past my limit to see what I could achieve with this type of routine. So how did it go?

The Wake up

Well…. Good and bad in this area. Most days I couldn’t get up earlier than 5. Even us “Morning people” have a limit and mine seems to be 5am IF I can get to bed on time.

The Night before

This wasn’t difficult for me when I wasn’t super busy, or didn’t want to have a life. But on the times when I did want to have a life, keeping up with this routine is impossible without losing some sleep, and I refuse to give up my sleep. I had to go to bed by 9pm each night, which wasnt hard because after a while I just started getting sleepy around that time. But I couldn’t hang with friends, or date, or anything really (besides a coffee or a brunch).

The Morning routine

So for my routine first I wrote in a gratitude journal, and I actually liked doing this on the days that I could remember.  I made my bed which had me feeling accomplished right at the beginning of my day, I liked that and It helped me to stay out of the bed when I really wanted to get back in (even though I did on several occasions). After that I had my coffee and planned my day then put in 2 solid hours of work on some of my side projects. I liked this because I felt like I was putting in work on my goals before I exhausted myself on work or other things that are more mundane. I then did yoga, which I liked doing in the morning, before getting dressed and heading out the door.

My Thoughts

So like I Said,  the routine, but the dealbreaker for me is the early wake up time. Some of the CEOs wake up as early as 3:15am (They can have it!). However, on the days that I did the routine (even if I didn’t wake up on time), I felt such a sense of accomplishment and a motivation that pushed me to achieve more and more. All in all I’d say the routine is a good one and that we should all take a version of it and adapt it to our lives. My reinvent your life series for 2019 year is definitely going to show my steps for trying to implement and change up many of the routines of my life and my mistakes along the way, and Hopefully you will follow along with me and reinvent your life as well.
