For years, women have strived to fight for control over our bodies and rights. We’ve come a long way over the years when it comes to our social, cultural, economic, and political achievements, and that’s something definitely worth celebrating! International Women’s Day falls on March 8th every year and this year’s theme is #BalanceforBetter, with a focus to create more gender balance. One of the best ways to celebrate this year is by empowering yourself as well as the women around you. Here are a few ways you can add to the celebration!
Lift Each Other Up
Sometimes as women, we may feel like we’re in competition with other women around us. It’s almost as if we’ve been hardwired into believing that we have to meet a certain standard to feel valuable, but with this mindset, we’ll all almost always fall short. Because of this, it’s more common for us to become threatened by other women; whether it be their beauty, success, or likability. If you catch yourself putting another woman down, either to her face or behind her back, stop yourself and think. Do you actually have a problem with her or does it have more to do with envy? Instead, make it a point to empower other women instead of tearing one another down. The best way to create more gender balance is by defusing the imaginary competition going on in our minds.
Work Towards Your Goals, While Encouraging Other Women to Follow Theirs
Having the courage to go after your dreams is an amazing thing. No matter how scary or life-changing your goals are, you should always work toward what makes you happy. By doing this, you’re actually setting an example for other women to pursue their own goals. When we feel empowered and happy in our own lives, we’re able to empower the women around us as well. But remember, no one’s path is better than another’s and there’s no set timeframe for you to accomplish something. Take your time, focus on your path, and you’ll get there!
Share Your Experience
There will be some instances where we must learn the lesson the hard way. Whether it be staying with a boyfriend who gave you all the red flags from the beginning or allowing yourself to procrastinate in your job search; so many of us go through the same life lessons and confusion. By sharing your experiences and knowledge, you can help other women avoid or work through the same situation you encountered. Sharing is one of the best ways we can support and protect one another.
Embrace Your Rights
So many influential women before us have fought for women’s rights and the control over our own bodies. They’re the reason we have the right to vote for our political leaders and hold management positions. They’re the reason we have access to birth control and family planning resources. They’re the reason that today women have so many more options and power than ever before. Embrace this evolution and feel empowered to be a woman.
