Pros and Cons of Acrylic Nails

I am all for long-lasting-nails. Strong, beautiful, able to withstand anything Mother Nature may throw at it. I briefly touched on UV gel nails a few weeks ago and how they can potentially weaken and damage your natural nail. Today I want to conquer ACRYLIC nails. I am not TOTALLY against these, since, the research explains that they are actually a safer alternative to UV gels. If you prefer acrylics remember these tips: a clean salon with use of autoclave, a manicurist whom does not thin and rough up your nails with that terrible drill, and a friendly staff at the salon. Without clean tools and improperly placed nails, the nail beds can develop fungus and bacteria and transmit them where ever and to whomever you...

For Healthier Skin…Try Milk of Magnesia…

I use Milk of Magnesia as a makeup primer for my oily skinned clients. Brushed on softly, it absorbs oil and shrinks pores, making skin more receptive to makeup but discouraging clogs and dirt. I apply it with a make-up wedge or a foundation brush. Many women find using their fingers to be the most effective application method (because of the warmth of their skin). It also leaves your make up with a “matte” look, which is ideal because you don’t want to have a shiny face…ever! There’s a difference between shiny and dewy! You can also use Milk of Magnesia as an acne treatment! So what does a laxative have to do with blemished skin? Well, it calms the skin just as much as it calms...

Prevent Getting Heart Disease (Part II)

Naturopathic DOCTOR GIVES TIPS TO PREVENT HEART DISEASE Before giving my recommendation, let me explain what Naturopathic physicians do. Naturopathic medicine focuses on holistic, proactive prevention and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. By using protocols that minimize the risk of harm, naturopathic physicians help facilitate the body’s inherent ability to restore and maintain optimal health. It is the naturopathic physician’s role to identify and remove barriers to good health by helping to create a healing internal and external environment. Along with good diet and exercise, certain supplements can help decrease the risk of different types of heart disease. My recommendation: Higher intake of magnesium has been associated with lower blood pressure and rates of heart disease, stroke, and metabolic syndrome. Dietary sources of Magnesium are green leafy vegetables...

Dionn Renee: How She Fought Lupus Through Art

Lupus was constantly on my mind. There was a time I couldn’t walk, confined to a wheel chair, and I almost flunked 8th grade because I spent most of my time in the hospital, so it was a lot to fight. I couldn’t do all the partying other kids were doing, because I felt God was going to judge me soon. When I was in the 8th grade, I heard my doctor tell the nurse that I may only live to be 21. At that time I looked like a skeleton. Instead of letting the disease kill my body and my dreams, when I felt pain, I let it inspire me. That pain, reminded me that you’re not going to be here too much longer So,...

Lace Front Closure

We have all seen it, yes the unfortunate situation where our weaved up sista has a gorgeous weave, except for one fatal flaw, her au natural coiled locks do not quite blend with her extended wavy Malaysian tresses. The strenuous blending situation happens when someone’s real hair is left out to cover over their weave extensions. With all the different textures available, it’s hard to choose one that best blends with our own natural textures. Well praise be to the hair gods who have come up with a solution to the avoid having a ‘party in the front, business in the back’ type situation. When worn with a weave, Lace Front Closures provide you with a seamless, natural looking scalp and hairline. You no longer have to...

Beauty Products

Every client I have has a pile of makeup in her bathroom that she "sometimes" uses….Translation: Never uses, but keeps just in case she finally learns how to properly apply blue eye shadow. Beauty products do expire. So the following is a list of make up expiration dates. "PS": Please keep in mind that these are estimates, no matter what anyone tells you, it's unlikely you'll go blind from using 2-year-old mascara but, I wouldn’t recommend it! •Concealer- Up to 12 months. •Powder- 2 years. •Cream & gel cleansers- 1 year. •Pencil eye liner should be sharpened regularly. Will last up to 3 years. •Eye shadow will last up to 3 years. •Sponges Wash weekly and discard monthly. •Foundation, check the ingredients: A water-based foundation will last up to 12 months, oil-based...

Lupus Awareness Month

The color purple means many things to many people. Most commonly, purple is the color chosen to symbolize Lupus awareness. Did you know that African American, Asian, and Latina women are much more likely to develop Lupus than white women? Women as young as FIFTEEN can develop this incurable illness. Lupus is an autoimmune affliction, meaning the body does not recognize its own tissues and defense systems. It causes inflammation and pain that can be mild to debilitating. Lupus can also cause extensive damage to the kidneys. Treatment options can range simply from Ibuprofen to extensive chemotherapy. “Flares” (when symptoms become heightened) seemed to be triggered more at periods of high stress. As with most illnesses, it is crucial to get the right amount of rest and relaxation....

Getting Heart Disease?

A commonly asked question from many of our BlackGirlHealth.com readers has been how to prevent heart disease. BlackGirlHealth.com Publisher Porcha Johnson sought advice from Dr. Jose.Taveras MD. He is a non-invasive cardiologist practicing at Montefiore Einsten Center for Heart a Vascular Care in the Bronx, New York. What are the 3 top things minority women don't know about how to prevent heart disease? Dr. Taveras: Most people are not aware of the risk they expose themselves to with a poor diet. Heart attacks in the United States are at epidemic proportions, yet, when you ask the average joe they tell you they had eggs and bacon for breakfast. How beneficial, easy and incredibly delicious a healthy diet  can be is, I would say, the most important thing most...
