#BlackLoveMatters

"There are more funerals than weddings," my grandmother said as I sat with her at her dining room table. We were discussing the fact that there was a high rate of black-on-black crime and very low rates of the ultimate testament of black love -- marriage. My grandmother and my grandfather had been married for close to 50 years. Their union was emblematic of the times. However, those times are long gone. According to a 2012 analysis of Census data by the Pew Research Center, 1 in 5 adults aged 25 and older (about 42 million people) had never been married, compared to 1 in 10 adults in 1960. The Pew analysis found that men were more likely than women to have never been married (23 percent vs. 17 percent...

ESSENTIAL OILS ARE ALL THE RAGE

Essential oils are all the rage. Companies (like DöTerra) are trying to attract you to their "pure" essential oil collections. Problem is, you don't have a clue what to do with them. Sure they smell great, but what are they? What can they do to improve your health? FIRST, essential oils are plant/ flower extracts that have within them, therapeutic and medicinal properties. Many years ago before doctors prescribed you pills (awful!) care providers found ailment cures with simple food changes as well as use of plant and herbal extracts. (Examples: Lavender to calm, oregano for digestive health, Frankincense for anti-inflammatory) Modern oils seek to offer the same goal: optimal health without chemical interaction. SECOND, Oils can be used in many ways, such as on the Skin; for blemishes, burns, skin tags,...

JASMIN ALEXANDER PROVES PEOPLE WRONG ABOUT THE STEROTYPICAL PAGEANT GIRL

I love performing and being under the lights. It’s fascinating to meet new people and have a reason to dress up. It’s almost my guilty pleasure. I also like to prove people wrong about the stereotypical pageant girl; I've never been her and it surprises people when I meet them and they realize I’m part of pageants. Normally the typical pageant girl is what you would call a girly girl; this girl lives for the spotlight and can be known as a crown chaser. In other words, they will do anything to get the crown. They don't necessarily like getting their hands dirty and they have to be dolled up 24/7. That's not me at all. Yes, I love dressing up and my face beat to...

CANCER AND FIBROIDS DIDN’T STOP ME FROM HAVING A BABY

I had always played sports, a non smoker, and generally healthy. Never did I think I would ever have a problem with my health, let alone having kids. But life throws you curve balls and I’ve had plenty. Luckily, these hurdles didn’t cost me my life, but they have changed my whole quality of life. At 23, I was diagnosed with stage II cervical cancer and I battled through it for 2 years. I was ashamed to discuss it with family or friends because everything I went through made me feel weak and less of a person. My boyfriend at the time (now husband) knew about it and supported me. At the time of my diagnosis a hysterectomy was recommended by my doctor. However, in my mind...

DIRTY NAIL SALONS ARE A TURN OFF!

I don’t know about you, but a dirty salon can definitely be a turn off. It’s important that the salon of your choice practices proper nail etiquette, in my opinion cleaning the equipment and wash bowls and tubs after every use is something that should be mandatory to prevent contamination.
