AFTER A LONG AFFAIR WITH BUNDLES, IM LOVING MY OWN HAIR

Well its 2016, resolutions have been created and broken by now. The “new year, new me” slogan is slowing replaced by whatever trending hashtag, and yet I have embarked on my own 2016 hair journey: wearing my real hair out! Trust me, when I say I had a whole complex. Wigs and weaves have been my go-to style for years now. I received chemotherapy two years ago, and with not enough hair to even make a ponytail, I opted for wigs and weaves to mask my extreme hair loss. I didn’t even know what my hair looked like other than in my infamous “wig” braids (you know the beat-down, can’t see the parts, girl-please-put-those-away- braids, yeah I had them). Until one day when my funds...

HOW HIV POSITIVE PATIENTS MAY HELP TO SAVE MORE THAN 1,000 LIVES A YEAR.

“This week, officials at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore received approval to begin conducting the first organ transplants from HIV-positive donors to HIV-positive recipients. This comes after a 2013 change in the law that lifted a ban in place since 1988. Surgeons at Johns Hopkins say that they are ready to begin performing liver and kidney transplants as soon as the appropriate candidates are available. NPR spoke with Dr. Dorry Segev, associate professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, who has worked for years to allow these kinds of organ transplants.” NPR’s Michael Martin. On how he started the campaign to change the law “The first thing we did was estimate what the impact would be of a law like this. So...

STUDY SHOWS THAT WOMEN CAN PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM HIV

Can women take proactive steps to protect themselves from HIV using a vaginal ring that has an antiretroviral drug? According to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health this ring provides a modest level of protection against HIV infection in women, a large clinical trial in four sub-Saharan African countries has found. The ring reduced the risk of HIV infection by 27 percent in the study population overall and by 61 percent among women ages 25 years and older, who used the ring most consistently.
