Good morning my sisters! I hope everyone is doing well and continuously learning and striving to be the healthiest versions of themselves possible. Today I wanted to focus on a topic regarding different medicine types for HIV. I know that a lot of you have heard of PEP and PrEP, but do you know which one is which, and what they truly are? Well today we are going to talk about it in hopes that it saves some lives. What is PrEP & How does it work? PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, and similarly to what the name suggests, this is the medicine you would take before you have been exposed to the virus. Personally I had no idea this existed until one of my gay friends...

How To Fall In Love With Yourself

Valentine’s Day approaches and some of us don’t have any plans. The holiday of love reminds so many women of the fact that they are “without love” but hopefully this year will be a lot different. This Valentine’s Day it’s time to fall in love with yourself! Alone Time: You’re probably thinking “Why on earth would I choose to be alone?” Here’s why. Every relationship requires effort and quality time, so why don’t you have that with yourself? Take some time to get to know yourself and start to enjoy your own company. Get to Know Yourself: As many years as we have alive, very often we think we know who we are and rely on the perceptions of others to alter our own perceptions of ourselves....

HIV Awareness | Concerning statistics regarding Black Women

We all know that there are disparities between communities, and HIV is no different. Our communities experience the highest HIV rates among all races and if you aren’t careful you could become apart of that statistic. As I say often, knowledge is power so make sure you’re getting tested regularly, simply because many of the black women infected with the disease, (7.2% of them to be exact) don’t even know they are infected (find out how often you should get tested here and where to get tested here). When it comes to black women, though we have some of the most devastating statistics, and so today I thought I would share a couple of these statistics so that we may get more serious about our...

The Power of Now Book review| BGH Bookclub

It's been a month since we launched the BGH book club and so now I’m here to bring you my take on it. The book for January was called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. This book changed my life when I first read it and I hoped it had the same effect on you. To start, I’d like to say that overall it wasn't huge bank of unknown information, but the way that he positioned it was new and refreshing. We all know that you become what you think about, and many of us (me included) know how to switch from negative draining, crippling thoughts, to happier, more positive thoughts. This takes practice, and dedication on its own, but now we are talking...

The Pros and Cons of Going Cold Turkey!

How many of us wanted to start a new diet or quit consuming something and thought the best way to do it was going cold turkey? My hand is raised because I know I have. Let me tell you, it was not easy! I’m going to give you my take on quitting soda cold turkey. I’m choosing soda because I am so deeply in love with Coca Cola that it’s crazy! So here are my pros and cons of quitting (Coca Cola) cold turkey. Pros Clearer Skin: As you know soda has way too much sugar in it for people like me to consume multiple times a day everyday. When I quit drinking soda cold turkey, I had noticeably clearer skin over time. Energy: Reducing the amount...

Medical technology is advancing almost as quickly as technology like that of the iPhone or Android, and let’s be real for a second, anything that makes doctor visits easier/faster/better is always a win. Well one of those advances is the HIV home-test kits. An HIV home test kit can be bought from almost anywhere, places like Walgreens have them and so does amazon. A home test kit can be as cheap as $20 and is a great solution for those of us who have trouble getting to a doctor, or other places that test for HIV. (Learn how to find options for testing centers near you here). Lots of people (including myself) are not even aware that these tests exist, and this is a big...
