Hey sis! I hope you’re working hard to create a life that you love, I know I am! However, sometimes working hard towards your goals isn’t enough. Not only do you need the drive to go forth and achieve, but you also need the right supplies and environment in order to assist and sustain you. If you are starting a weight-loss journey, you will have to be able to access to the fruits and vegetables needed to sustain your diet. Unfortunately, some people don’t have access to the fruits and vegetables needed to sustain a healthy lifestyle because of where they live, these areas are called food deserts.
What is a food desert?
A food desert an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. Reading that definition, you may be thinking, “but this is America the land of opportunity, how is it that people don’t have access to food?”. Well, they may have access to food, but they don’t have access to food that is healthy in most cases. In these instances people can only get to a convenience or corner store, most of which don’t sell a variety of fruits or, any vegetables.
What can I do if I live in a food desert?
If you live in a food desert there are a few things you can do to get access to healthier and/or more affordable fruits and vegetables, some of the most popular are:
- Carpool to the store – this is the most basic, that also may be the best option for a lot of people. If affordable food is out of your area, see if any of your neighbors or anyone at your church can carpool with you to go to the grocery store.
- Order online for delivery – this is the one that I actually tried and really liked. There is a fee so if affordability is some of the problem then is may not be super helpful, but depending on how far it is, it can be affordable by saving you on gas.
- Use coupons/coupon codes – coupon clipping is the old school back in the day way of saving money. However, in today’s world you can find coupons and sales online at the store’s website. And they often have loyalty cards that can save you a few dollars as well.
- Start a garden – now I understand that you won’t be able to grow everything, especially if you live in an urban area, however there are many things that you can grow right in side your home either next to a window or on a balcony or porch. For example they have this hanging garden, that you can put on your wall.
So that is a brief explanation of what a food desert is, and a couple different approaches you can take to help live a healthier life even though you’re living in a food desert. It’s my hope that everyone living in the food desert, can use one or more of these tips to reach your health and weight-loss goals.
