A Very Becoming Book Review| February|BGH Book of the Month

Hey Sis! Its that time again!

You already know it’s time to do our monthly book review and the book for this month was long but worth it! In honor of black history month I chose to have us read Becoming by Michelle Obama our first black First Lady. Let me just say I loved this book. She was so real throughout the book and if you’re like me and had the audio version it was so nice that she narrated it herself. She talked about her life from childhood all the way through to adulthood, and touched on a variety of topics. Even though she went to prestigious schools and was the first lady of the United States, she is so relatable in this book and I saw so much of myself in her.

My Fave: The Advice

One of my favorite parts of the book was when she was sitting in the car with her mother, right after she picked her up from the airport after returning from her friend’s funeral. Even though I was listening to it (and driving, gotta multitask!) I could picture the look on her face when she talked about how she wasn’t happy with her job at Sidley and Austin. She expressed it to her mother and I could almost feel the burn of her mother’s side-eye as she gave the advice “get the money first and worry about your happiness later.” I shuddered at the sound of that advice and I’m sure Michelle did too. I’m currently in the same position of trying to make my dreams into reality (although not quite at the same level). I could go get a banker’s job somewhere and make almost 3 times what I make as an entrepreneur, but I don’t want the burden of unhappiness and the lack of fulfillment that comes with a job like that. Reading her book was almost like the advice I never got, and the push to continue to chase my dreams that I’ve been needing over these past few months.

My Least fave: Politics

Now that i’ve rambled on about my favorite part of the book I’d like to talk about my least favorite part, the politics. She articulated this part of the story so well that I had flashbacks to the headlines she mentioned. She talked about how that categorized her as an angry black woman, made fun of her clothes, and tried to dog her out at every step. The way she expressed her vulnerabilities through this time was so relatable that I almost welled up with tears myself. So many of us go through this same thing, just on different scales, but no matter what it hurts us the same way.

Thank You Michelle!

After reading this book all I can do is thank Michelle for watching it. She shows us that no matter how “perfect” you are (or you seem), that you have the same basic struggles as the rest of us. To see you pull through to be an amazing first lady, is the gift that keeps on giving, inspiration for black women everywhere.

If you didn’t join us for our book club book this month, then I still suggest that you read this one. And while your at it pick up our book for next month as well. In honor of Spring Cleaning being just over the horizon we are readying ourselves by reading The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.

As as always, don’t forget to live your best life sis, and I’ll see you next month!

XoXo

Nikki
