3 Tips for Working Out with Natural Hair

It’s no secret that working out with natural hair can be a bit of a struggle. Humidity, sweat, and all the things that accompany a good exercise session are the very same things that can take a cute hair style from “yasss girl” to “girl what happened?” But don’t let your potential hair woes stop you from getting a good workout routine in on a regular basis. We have three simple things you can do to make sure your hair stays fly before AND after you hit the gym.

  1. Protection is key. Yes, we know you may have finally mastered the perfect twist out but the gym is not the time to let those coils and curls flow. Protecting your hair is essential if you want your natural hair style to stay in place after your workout. Whether that’s pulling it up in a pineapple or bun or putting in some twists, you want to make sure your hair is secured. And don’t forget to protect your edges by tying it down as well.
  2. Let your scalp breathe. Notice we said, tie down your edges, not your whole head? The quickest way to ruin a style to wrap your head and trap all the moisture that accumulates as you workout inside. Let your scalp breathe as you workout and allow your hair to dry completely before you start to manipulate it if it’s particularly wet.
  3. Allow your hair routine to follow your exercise routine. Often times we think it’s the workout session that is causing our hair not to flourish, which is both true and not. When you sweat during your workout, although your hair might still look flawless when you’re done, there is still sweat and oil that is being produced. If you follow a more rigorous workout routine, your natural hair wash routine should follow suit. Try adding a co-wash to your regular routine if you’d prefer to take it easy on shampoo but still want to keep your hair clean.
