With summer here in full effect, there’s one conversation that we need to be having. It’s about sunscreen. We’ve heard it all before ladies. The universal–and scary myth–that women of color don’t need to wear sunscreen. Now, we get it, there is some truth behind the statement that “black don’t crack” but trust us, if you want to protect your melanin and keep your skin looking its best as you age, you absolutely need to be wearing sunscreen daily.
Before we jump into the good stuff like which sunscreen you should try, our favorites, and the best options for women of color, let’s talk about the basics. ANYone who is exposed to the sun at ANY point should be slathering on the sunscreen like their favorite body butter. The sun’s UVA and UVB rays are harmful to the skin and if you’re not protected, you’re not only risking the possibility of sunburn–yes black women can get sunburned too–but also increasing the chances of premature aging in your skin. Sun damage is responsible for things like dry skin, dark spots, and even the appearance of fine lines. This is why it’s so important to protect the melanin! And constantly exposing your unprotected skin to the sun can increase your risk for developing skin cancers later in life.
Did you know: African American patients were most likely to be diagnosed with [skin cancer] in its later stages than any other group in the study, and they also had the worst prognosis and the lowest overall survival rate. ~ skincancer.org
BEST SUNSCREEN FOR BLACK WOMEN
When it comes to using sunscreen, one obstacle that black women face is finding one that looks good on our skin. Too many leave behind an ashy white or gray look to the skin which is another reason why we’ve opted out of using them. Fortunately, there are some great options for us that will protect our skin and keep it cute!
CoverFX Clear Cover Invisible Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30: The reason we love this sunscreen is right there in the name. It’s a transparent sunscreen that applies clear and never leaves any grayness behind. It works perfectly on brown skin because it was specifically developed to meet the needs of women of color.
Glossier Invisible Shield Sunscreen: This Glossier sunscreen is the new kid on the block but it’s quickly become one of our favorites. Another option that is basically clear once applied to the skin, it also has a really nice gel texture that feels good. It has SPF 35 so slightly higher than our first pick and works not only to protect the skin from the sun but other environmental stressors.
Farmacy Green Screen Daily: For the ladies who like their beauty products all natural, this is the best option for women of color. It has an SPF 30 and is made with all natural ingredients like plant extracts and natural minerals. Unlike the other two choices, this does apply a cream color but blends in pretty easily. No ashy look left behind.
