I am a first generation American of Haitian decent hailing out of Brooklyn, New York. In the Haitian culture almost every meal is based around rice and beans. If I haven't had rice and beans I feel as if I haven't had a real meal. In addition to that my mom always cooked growing up, so we rarely ate out. If we had McDonald's or another fast food it was a treat, not the norm. Over the years particularly the last 3, I've realized there's a difference between eating and being nourished.
